Once In A While

October 29, 2019

The half-term break has just begun. The last week leading to the half-term was a struggle. The week seem longer than normal and I just wanted to scream each morning I dropped the children off to school.

The same scenario played itself repeatedly. Parents with children, some chatty some grumpy. Cars of all modes scattered around, people watchful of the minute the bell would go off, some break into a run, others just wouldn’t bother.

I walked past many people, trying hard to avoid staring into faces, knowing fully well we all ruminated on the same thoughts: get these little creatures to school, then face the day’s offerings.

Life With Its Little Chores

Life is full of things to do. Some of these things are fun while others are uninteresting, boring and painstaking. Take for instance the act of dropping children off and picking them from school. This wears me out. Everything (ironing the uniforms, little talks, pack lunches etc) leading to the actual act fizzles me out.

Don’t get me wrong, I got on with this chore every day, not processing the rigidity of it, with kisses and great words, but I cringe each time the thought crossed my mind.

Cooking is one of the few things I enjoy. I’m secretly proud of my culinary skills and I’m at my proudest when people marvel at its delights. But, once in a while, I dread the kitchen and thoughts of heat and sweat freak me out.

Getting Bored Of The Norm

I am fine with laundry, but sorting the clothes and getting them to dry annoys me. With three children, there is no escape route out of this tangled web, but somehow, I get on with a deep frown on my face.

Not wanting to get into the kitchen, do the laundry or getting the children ready sometimes doesn’t make you a bad parent. It only shows the dynamism of the world we live in and the flexibility your body demands.

Once in a while, it is okay to just chill out. Once in a while, it is perfectly alright to shift your responsibilities. Life is dynamic, so are you.

Once In A While

So, what do you do when you have your moment of not wanting to do anything? The moment you ignore the untidiness of your impeccable house? The moment you purposely let the kids enjoy extra binging on sweet and screen? The extra time spent on the phone or just doing whatever rows your boat?

My simple advice is to enjoy that moment before the guilt set in. The world is not going to end because you chose to derail from your virtuous circle once in a while. Listen to your body, embrace that moment and refill your cup whenever necessary. Remember, life goes on with or without you.

Sometimes doing nothing is doing something; and that something is you having your time to yourself to whatever you want with it! Great write up sis!
