What Do You Really Want?

A Friend For Life

A few days ago, I got fixated on an article, it must have been the topic that got me hooked, I sank deeply in the softness of my pillow savaging the pleasure this good piece offered.

At the end of this article, I became confused. Not because the writing wasn’t good enough. No. It was one of the best writing I read in weeks. However, I was troubled with the question the writer threw at me at the end.

I have always known what I wanted in life, or so I thought. Things don’t usually land on my plate, somehow I cracked on with the thornsspines, and prickles of life.

An ambiguous question of what happiness meant to me troubled me for days. I don’t want to sound monotonous, but everyone I know wants pretty much the same in life and to some extent, I do too.

What Makes Me Happy?

I often imagined driving one of the tens of beautiful cars that drove past me every day, even though I have no knowledge of car brands or makes, I longed for the beasts of them all.

My dream house is a beautiful countryside cottage with a modern touch. This house would offer wood-burning stove and sea views with a large spacious kitchen. A study with views over the garden and to the river. My love for space and green top the list, therefore my dream home must boost these two in abundance.

I am not keen on modern buildings with its top of the notch appliances. Peace and quiet with quality air to breath would be one of the few things to look out for. A house tangled with beautifully arranged ivy, tweets of birds filling the air every morning; trees with green leaves and shrubs. Nature in all its glory. The tranquillity of rural life, what a beauty!

What I described is not different from what many people want. The good things of life, security, good health, peace and quietness. These are the obvious things, things that material wealth can offer. The question I have been asking myself is this “What makes me happy apart from the obvious?”

What Makes Me Happy Apart FromThe Obvious?

I thought for a while and asked myself this question. It’s obvious I want the good things of life and these are part of the obvious. The beautiful car and my dream countryside cottage home are part of the obvious.

Part of the philosophy of life is the mystery of self-questioning. The more you question, the more you wondered and discover some fact about yourself. I want the obvious like many of you, but with my self-questioning, one thing stood tall- I want more than money could buy. I want the little luxuries which are priceless, I want sincerity, companionship and the truth.

The truth I Desire.

I want spiritual fulfilment. The love of people and the trust therein. A smile that reflects the sincerity of the heart. I want to be surrounded by people who stretched out their hearts, people whose empathy are way deeper than the tune of their voices. A hug that transcends the warmth it encompasses. Memories that shine lights in me and those little luxuries too expensive to purchase with money.

I have met a large number of people in my journey of life. Some with wealth and luxuries of many forms. Happiness has no price tag. You might disagree with me for it’s a well-known fact that a certain degree of wealth walks hand in hand with happiness. Yes, you are right. Wealth brings contentment: a certain degree of happiness, but happiness doesn’t depend on wealth.

The satisfaction a bunch of beautiful flowers gives; the sincerity behind little gifts, family, friendship and trust. Love that knows no bound.

In as much as I want the wealth and the luxury of this world, the abstraction of pure happiness is what I dream of. Don’t just wish for the obvious. Wish for more.
